Baltimore Arabber History Preservation

Algerina Perna / The Baltimore Sun

Nicole King, Associate Professor of American Studies, and Bill Shewbridge, Professor of Practice in Media and Communication Studies and their students will continue their community-based cultural documentation project in Southwest Baltimore for the Arabber Preservation Society. The collaboration will document and preserve the work of the Arabbers, Baltimore’s horse-cart vendors. In addition to collecting oral history interviews, the project will gather archival materials for a planned documentary. This will include digitizing video and photo materials currently in the Maryland Traditions Archive at UMBC. This activity supports the continuation of preserving oral histories of Baltimore culture bearers.
